Founded in in 1993, the Doo Wop Shop is the oldest (and only all-male) a cappella group at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. Despite notable performances including the White House and Radio City Music Hall, the group comes from humble beginnings. A founding member asked some friends to help serenade his special love interest outside her door. As the awkward young men started to sing, other ladies flooded into the hallway to hear them – the Doo Wop Shop has been wooing hearts ever since.
The Harvard Callbacks are a 15-member mixed a cappella group composed entirely of Harvard undergraduate students. We sing songs from a wide range of genres, focusing on R&B, soul, pop, rock, and jazz.
Conceived in the fall of 1986 by undergraduates Craig Hickman and Morgan Inniss, the Callbacks originated as a mixed a cappella group aiming to diversify the spectrum of artistic performance at the college. We readily developed a musical presence of our own, earning recognition across campus and beyond for our unique style and captivating performances.
They have percussion without drums, a rhythm section without a bass—the only instruments on stage are the nine voices of the nationally renowned a cappella group Vocal Point. Hailing from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, this nine-man group takes the songs you hear on the radio and delivers a new rendition, complete with all the complex instrumentation, performed only with the sounds of their mouths. The group competed and finished in the top five on the nationally televised competition NBC’s The Sing-Off in 2011.
